How Solar Panels and EVs Work Together

The practical and financial benefits of pairing home solar panels with an electric vehicle for clean, low-cost driving.

Solar panels and electric vehicles are a natural pairing. The solar panels generate clean electricity during the day, and the EV stores and uses it for transportation, creating a closed loop of renewable energy. Solar panels and EVs work together by turning home generated electricity into transportation energy. The basic sizing math is straightforward: multiply annual driving miles by vehicle efficiency, then compare that kWh demand with expected solar production. A driver covering 12,000 miles per year in an EV using 30 kWh per 100 miles needs about 3,600 battery kWh annually, plus charging losses from the wall. System size depends heavily on location, roof angle, shading, and utility rules. In a sunny region, a 6 to 8 kW system may produce enough electricity to offset both household use and a large share of EV charging. In cloudier regions or shaded roofs, the same system may produce much less. A useful solar quote should show annual kWh production, seasonal variation, panel degradation assumptions, and how much of the EV load it can realistically offset.
