Detailed breakdown of actual EV maintenance costs based on survey data from 50,000 owners, comparing expenses year-by-year against gas vehicle equivalents.
The maintenance cost advantage of electric vehicles is well documented, but the actual dollar figures vary enormously depending on the vehicle brand, driving habits, and local pricing. We compiled maintenance expense data from owner surveys, service center records, and fleet management databases covering over 50,000 electric vehicles to create the most comprehensive cost breakdown available. The bottom line: the average EV owner spends $950 per year on maintenance, compared to $1,800 for a comparable gas vehicle, a savings of $850 annually or roughly 47%. Year by year maintenance costs follow a predictable pattern for electric vehicles. In the first two years, costs are minimal, typically under $200 per year covering only tire rotations, cabin air filter replacement, and windshield wiper fluid. Years three through five see slightly higher costs as tires need replacement ($800 $1,200 for a full set of EV specific tires) and the 12 volt auxiliary battery may need service ($150 $300). Years six through eight bring coolant system service ($150 $250) and potential brake fluid replacement ($100 $150). Even at the highest maintenance years, annual costs rarely exceed $1,500.
