DIY EV Charging Installation at Home

A step-by-step guide to installing a home EV charger yourself, including electrical requirements, safety considerations, and cost savings.

Installing a Level 2 home charger is one of the first things new EV owners should do, and for those with basic electrical knowledge, it is a project that can be completed in a few hours. Professional installation typically costs $500 to $1,500 in labor, but DIY installation can save much of that if your electrical panel has sufficient capacity and you are comfortable working with 240 volt circuits. Before starting any electrical work, verify that your panel has enough capacity for a 240 volt, 40 or 50 amp circuit. Most EV chargers draw 32 to 40 amps continuously, which requires a dedicated circuit breaker rated at 40 or 50 amps (the breaker must be rated 25 percent above the continuous load). If your panel is already near capacity, you may need a panel upgrade before installing a charger, which is work that should be done by a licensed electrician. The physical installation involves mounting the charger unit on the wall, running appropriately sized wire from the electrical panel to the charger location, and connecting the wires to both the breaker and the charger. Most residential EV chargers use 6 gauge copper wire for 40 amp circuits or 4 gauge for 50 amp circuits. The charger…
