Can You Tow with an Electric Vehicle

Understanding EV towing capabilities, range impact, and which electric vehicles are best suited for towing trailers and boats.

Towing with an electric vehicle is absolutely possible, but it comes with considerations that differ significantly from towing with a gas or diesel truck. The impact on range, the importance of route planning, and the selection of the right EV for towing duties all require careful thought before hitching up. Yes, many electric vehicles can tow, but the right question is how far they can tow comfortably with your trailer. Electric motors are excellent for towing because they deliver instant torque, smooth low speed control, and regenerative braking on descents. The tradeoff is energy use: a trailer adds weight and aerodynamic drag, which can reduce highway range by 30 to 50 percent or more depending on trailer shape, speed, terrain, and weather. Trailer shape often matters more than trailer weight. A low utility trailer carrying equipment may have a smaller range penalty than a tall enclosed camper that catches wind. Speed also changes the result dramatically. Towing at 65 mph can be far more efficient than towing at 75 mph, and headwinds can make a planned charging stop arrive sooner than expected. For EV towing, aerodynamic drag is usually the planning enemy.
