Are Electric Cars Really Better for the Environment? A Deep Lifecycle Analysis

Comprehensive lifecycle environmental analysis of EVs versus gas cars covering manufacturing, driving, and end-of-life impacts with data from major research institutions.

The environmental case for electric vehicles is frequently challenged with the argument that battery manufacturing offsets the emissions savings from driving electric. This argument was partially valid for first generation EVs with small batteries manufactured on coal powered grids, but it has become increasingly disconnected from current reality. Multiple independent lifecycle analyses from MIT, the International Council on Clean Transportation, and the European Environment Agency all reach the same conclusion: electric vehicles produce significantly fewer total emissions over their lifetime, and the gap is widening every year as grids get cleaner and manufacturing becomes more efficient. Manufacturing emissions for electric vehicles are indeed higher than for gas cars, approximately 30 to 50 percent higher when the battery is included. A typical 75 kWh battery pack generates 8 to 12 tons of CO2 during production, depending on the energy source used in manufacturing. However, this manufacturing penalty is recovered within the first 15,000 to 25,000 miles of driving in most regions. After that breakeven point, every mile driven in an EV produces fewer emissions than the same mile…
