Understanding EV Battery Degradation in Plain Language

How modern EV batteries actually wear over time, what the data from real fleets shows, and the daily habits that protect long term capacity.

Battery degradation is one of the most asked about topics in electric vehicles, and also one of the most misunderstood. Owners hear horror stories about replacement costs, then see real fleets reporting tiny losses after 100,000 miles. The truth sits in the middle, and depends heavily on how the battery is used. This guide breaks down what degradation actually is, what causes it, and the small habits that protect long term capacity without turning ownership into a science project. What battery degradation really means Every lithium battery loses a small amount of usable capacity over time. For most modern EV packs, this looks like: 1 to 2 percent loss in the first year About 1 percent per year afterward A long flat curve through years 5 to 10 Possible faster decline very late in life This is not the same as failure. A pack at 90 percent capacity still works exactly like it did at delivery, just with slightly less range at the top end. The two kinds of degradation Degradation has two main causes that work on different timelines. Calendar aging The battery slowly ages even when sitting idle. This is driven by chemistry, temperature, and average state of charge. A pack stored in hot…
